Greek-Australian Gavos Freight Solutions honoured with national customs award

Greek-Australian–run Gavos Freight Solutions (GFS) has been recognised on one of the industry’s biggest stages, taking out the 2025 Customs Broker of the Year at the DCN Australian Shipping & Maritime Industry Awards. The win marks a major milestone for the Melbourne-based family business and its founder, Peter J. Gavos — a proud Greek Australian and Accredited Customs & Quarantine Broker.

From airport chaos to industry excellence Established in 2003, GFS has grown into a dynamic Australian-owned freight forwarder and customs brokerage specialising in all facets of air and sea freight, including consolidation logistics, break bulk, personal effects, and in-house customs clearance. With over 40 years of combined experience, the team is known for handling complex situations with accuracy, speed, and genuine care.

Despite their expertise, Peter said they entered the awards feeling like “the underdog.” Standing alongside some of the country’s largest brokerages, winning the title was “a moment we’re still trying to process.”

“We’ve always focused on doing the small things properly, looking after everyone, and treating every client — big or small — with the same respect,” he said. “To see those old-school values recognised on a national stage is truly surreal.”

A family legacy built on dedication GFS is proudly family-run. Peter’s wife, Melinda, serves as company director, and their son, Nicholas, is already making his mark — earning the IFCBAA Young Professional of the Year 2025 earlier this year.

The business is also a trusted partner of Greek Plateia, reflecting shared community spirit and cultural pride.

Why the win matters The DCN Awards honour excellence in compliance, innovation, and client service. Judges praised GFS for its strong training culture and transparent communication — qualities that underpin the “white glove service” the team strives to deliver daily.

Peter extended a heartfelt thank you to their clients. “Your trust in the moments where accuracy and timing matter most is the reason we push ourselves to be better every day.”

Looking ahead While the award is a major milestone, the team says it’s only the beginning. GFS plans to expand broker training and continue raising the bar for their clients.

“We’re proud of how far we’ve come, but even more excited for what lies ahead,” Peter said. “The work never stops — and we’re only just getting started.”
